Congress of the People’s political leader Winston Dookeran was recently invited to, and attended a Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) conference in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada under the theme “towards a global new deal.”
Mr. Dookeran was one of the 100 or so specially invited persons who gathered together from October 02nd to 04th, to discuss deep matters pertaining to world governance issues.
When he addressed the elite gathering, Mr. Dookeran placed on the agenda for consideration two issues.
On one hand, he challenged the conference to seriously consider that as the world’s financial system seeks to recover from the gloomy time it has been going through, that there cannot be a return to the old status quo.
He made it clear that it was not good enough to simply fix the old system, because the old regulatory system has proven to be inefficient. Any new system, he argued, must have a clear linkage to world development.
Additionally, Mr. Dookeran spoke towards the evolving of the governance outlook of the G20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-20_major_economies). He said that they need to identify how small economies can affect G20 development.
The keynote speakers at the conference were Nobel Laureate in Economics, Paul Krugman, Former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and Professor of law at Harvard Law School, Roberto Ungar.
Mr. Dookeran held one on one discussion with Mr. Martin and Mr. Ungar, and in addition to bouncing off developmental ideas with them, explored the possibility of having them visit Trinidad and Tobago.
Mr. Dookeran also held talks with the prominent black Canadian politician/diplomat Alvin Curling, who was instrumental in a research on the Roots of Youth Violence in Ontario.
The research was established in the summer of 2007 to help identify and analyze the underlying causes contributing to youth violence and provide recommendations for Ontario to move forward.
While on a tight schedule, Mr. Dookeran took time out to have some initial discussions on the findings of this research.
It is your political leader’s belief that any plan for the development of this country must include the key factors of finance and crime.
