| The Congress of the People is calling on the government to be transparent with the citizens of this country regarding the proposed Rapid Rail Project and to show respect for the rights of citizens as they proceed with this or any other project.
Speaking at a media conference today (Monday, January 18, 2010) in support of the Citizens for Social Justice (CFSJ) (a group of concerned persons from the Cunupia area which are earmarked for dislocation because of the project), Political Leader of the Congress of the People, Winston Dookeran said that the track record of the government with the Smelter Plant among others shows a lack of respect for citizens’ rights.
While acknowledging government’s developmental rights, Mr. Dookeran said that good governance demands that the cloud of secrecy about the project be removed, questions be answered forthrightly about the cost benefit analysis among others, and the people who will be affected be heard and their rights faithfully considered, when decisions are being made.
Mr. Dookeran called on the Government to have true consultations with the families that will be affected by the project and not just consultations that are of no consequence; save and except to satisfy international environmental regulations.
Meanwhile, Nadine Mangalee and Pundit Bisham Sewdat of (CFSJ) said that while the word coming from the government was that the rail road project was on hold, work was being done on it and several attempts over the last few months to get information on the project have failed.
Letters have been written to NIDCO, the Minister of Works and even the Prime Minister but to no avail.
They thanked the COP for responding to their cry for help and have met with Mr. Dookeran and COP’s Deputy Political Leader Prakash Ramadhar.
The group said that they are concerned that prime agricultural lands and their livelihood stands to be lost and wonders if attempts were made by government to find routes for the rapid rails that will cost the least amount of discomfort and trepidation for citizens.
