ABRUPT CANCELLATION OF UTT SYMPOSIUM IS OUTRAGEOUS

Author: Winston Dookeran
Date: 2010-02-05 00:00:00

In light of the sudden cancellation of the planned symposium on the aftermath of the recent UNC elections which was to be held at NALIS on Thursday 4th February2010, the Congress of the People is demanding an official explanation from those responsible for the cancellation.

I see this cancellation as highhanded and outrageous and a clear attack on academic freedom in this country.

This symposium was organised by the Academy for Arts & Letters to generate debate and ideas relating to the possible outcome of the UNC internal election and was to feature an impressive panel comprising of Professors Selwyn Ryan and Brinsley Samaroo, Dr Indira Rampersad and Dr Keith Rowley.

The government continues to show that it is in a state of panic, resulting from the groundswell of public disgust in just about every facet of its administration.

Is it that the government is so fearful of its ultimate and foreseeable demise that it has moved to suffocate the rights to free speech and the exchange of political ideas?

What is emerging is a sinister and dangerous move which should be seen by all free-thinking people in our society as the first true manifestation of a failed state.

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights of the United Nations (UN) guarantees the right to free speech and the right to hold opinion, and we in the COP will consult with the UN and other agencies about these sinister developments.

I urge the media to demand answers at the highest about the incident, because such a trend must not be allowed to gain any more traction.
