Local Government Minister Hazel Manning needs to apologize to the hard working people of Arima and to the entire nation for her insensitive and unbecoming remarks at a public meeting in Arima yesterday.
It is beyond disgraceful that the minister could tell the proud people of Arima that their community “was bush” fifty-six years ago, in a blatant attempt to pat her PNM administration on its back for seemingly doing so much.
Her remark must be seen in light of recent remarks by other PNM ministers, who seem to believe that as leaders they should not be questioned or challenged, so any such challenge should be dismissed with disdain.
Minister Peter Taylor‘s remark about people living off the fat of the land and becoming too comfortable, and Minister of Sports Gary Hunt who initially brushed off concerns about the $2million flag at the National Stadium, saying it was a symbol of national pride, all fall in the same category.
It speaks of a leadership that tells people not to question, not to inquire, but rather just accept what we are doing and applaud.
Well, Mrs. Manning in this instance needs to know that it is not good enough to come around because Local Government Elections is in the air, present a “plan” and expect residents to sit back, smile, and say well done.
And certainly, she is not allowed to insult us when we don’t clap to her tune.
