The COP Youth Congress is abhorred at the blatant lack of consultation by the Ministry of Education in the establishment of same sex schools in this country. The modification of 20 schools to same sex schools is an issue at the heart of our educations system.
We are calling on the Minister to reverse this decision until proper consultations have been held with the parents, teachers, and students of the respective schools, along with other major stakeholders.
There would need to be separate curricula for the boys and the girls. Has the Ministry developed such curricula? We are calling for this separation of the schools to be immediately halted pending proper consultations.
The issue should not be whether boys are leaning better than girls, but whether the government schools have met the requisite standards. The issue should be one of denominational school versus government schools, and NOT male student versus female student. The Ministry is attempting to cover its inability to deliver quality education. There are several problems with the state education system, such as
- the quality and relevance of curriculum
- The working conditions of teachers
- The inability of schools to address social issues, such as sex, discipline and community values
- The failure of the system to address the non-academic aspects of education such as social and poverty issues
The issues also need to be examined at the primary school level. Many students enter the secondary school system with problems of illiteracy, poor discipline and poor social skills, because the Government's PRIMARY school system does not address this.
The COP Youth Congress is also calling on the Ministry of Education to also address the ineffectiveness of the government's primary schooling.
