COP Chairman Roy Augustus confirmed today that the Congress of the People (COP) is giving priority to the screening of candidates in anticipation of an early poll as signaled by Prime Minister Manning.
The announcement of an early election and the release of the Uff Report has generated increased excitement with the COP, and its offices at Flagship House and Charlieville have been inundated with persons and telephone calls demanding movement in finding candidates to face the electorate.
Mr. Augustus said that it is clear that members and supporters of the COP are determined to defeat the PNM, with or without the other political parties. He reinforced the partys interest in being a part of the next government, as stated in documents sent to the other parties for study and amendment.
We are aiming for achieving a sustainable unified approach, as defined by Political Leaders Winston Dookeran and Deputy Political Leader Prakash Ramadhar, and are awaiting on the UNCs Unity Team to meet with the COPs team, chaired by Wendy Lee Yuen.
Discussions with representatives from the National Joint Action Committee are already underway and there are tentative discussions with many other groups, all trying to bring an end to the disgraced PNM administration. Mr. Augustus said that it was particularly pleasing to talk to new supporters from Laventille and the entire East/West Corridor.
