Winston Dookeran, Political Leader of the Congress of the People, has lamented that: "The denial of US Consultant, Bernard Campbell entry into Trinidad and Tobago will contribute significantly to a deterioration of the international image of the country."
The complaint lodged by the US Embassy at this act of discrimination threatens and erodes the progress in relations achieved by this country at the Fifth Summit of the Americas. That the Minister of National Security, Martin Joseph denies giving the order, when according to the Immigration Act, only the Minister can determine who is "an undesirable visitor" is a clear abuse of power for narrow political purposes.
Also on foreign policy, the COP supports regional integration and the resolution of trade and territorial issues which strengthen Caribbean integration. We join UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad Bissesar in condemning the continued arrogation of power by Mr. Manning in signing a treaty with Grenada when Parliament has been suspended and there has been no consultation on this matter with the Opposition or the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
