A large crowd of people and the local media attended an event at the Queens Park Savannah organized by the Congress Of the People. 509 "souls" (cut out cardboard figures) representing 509 murders last year, were mounted opposite President's House. Six "new souls" painted on the spot, represented six persons murdered in the last 24 hours.

The Congress of the People wishes to register its strong disapproval of an apparent policy of the Government interference with the democratic rights and responsibilities of citizens to peacefully express their disapproval of the Manning Government's policies.

The high-handed, partisan, illegal and intimidating tactics of harassment meted out to COP activists following an event staged to highlight crime and corruption in the country is unacceptable. This disproportionate response must not be tolerated by the citizens of this country.

Shortly after the event, at which Winston Dookeran, Political Leader of the COP, Joe Toney, former Minister of National Security and Anil Roberts, COP-UNC candidate for D'abadie-Omera, spoke and then left, police began to question and investigate supporters who were dismounting the card board cut outs of "souls", representing the 509 people murdered in 2009. Six people murdered over the past 24 hours is a pathetic reminder of the fact that the Minister of National Security is more concerned with intimidating its political opponents and staying in power than providing security to the citizens of this country.
