Residents Appeal to Dookeran for Help - Tunapuna Candidate Responds

Media Release

Political Leader of the Congress of the People and candidate for the
Tunapuna constituency, Winston Dookeran met today with the Administration of the El Dorado East Secondary School. Mr Dookeran went directly from a walkabout in the Caura area to the School in response to pleas for assistance from residents who have been affected by violence involving school children.

The Vice Principal of the School, Mr Laloo Hart apprised Mr Dookeran and a team including COP Deputy Leader Wendy Lee Yuen and Attorney Vernon De Lima of the most recent developments. According to reports from residents and the School's Administration, some students clashed with villagers in the area yesterday afternoon. In that incident, one car was vandalized and a person was injured, resulting in their hospitalization.

Mr. Hart reported to Dookeran that the police have been informed but action has not yet been taken. Earlier in the morning, a group of villagers came to the School and officials have agreed to meet with residents of the area tomorrow.

The Vice Principal indicated that old methods of discipline are not working so the Administration intends to work more closely with parents.

Speaking after the meeting, Dookeran said that the People's Partnership supports this approach. However, he is concerned that, "at the highest levels the Ministry of Education seems to accept this problem of violence and indiscipline involving school children as the new reality. I cannot accept this approach. They seem only concerned with plasters to contain and manage this problem whereas our policy will be to get to the source of the problem to root it out completely."

"There is no urgency and the Leadership of Ministry of Education has not taken this seriously. All the people of Tunapuna - and indeed Trinidad and Tobago - deserve to be safe; children deserve the opportunity to be children - to go to school, to play, to participate in sports and other extra curricular activities without being in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Therefore we will make safety our top priority and fixing the broken education system the foundation of our national development strategy."
