Address by Mr. Winston Dookeran - Final Rally in Aranguez

Election 2010 Campaign Speech
Author: Winston Dookeran
Date: 2010-05-24 01:05:19

My friends, my people, let us declare in one voice, right here right now, that Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday May the 25th.

The hills of Laventille are here; the plains of Naparima are here; and Tunapuna is here as well. And it's licks like fire in Tunapuna come Monday. All of Trinidad and Tobago is here. For many years, I have travelled this journey, listening and learning. I felt your pain. I shared your agony. I listened to your inner voices for a better tomorrow. Today, in Aranguez, in this little nation of ours, it is finally happening. It is finally happening. It is here. It is your victory that is about to take place in this country shortly. It is your vision for a united people that has come alive, and nothing, nothing, nobody will stop it from going on and going on and going on and going on, as we build this nation how we want to make it.

Your joy is here today. At last we have formed together. At last we have formed the People's Partnership, the vehicle to take us further into government in our country. It is the spirit of the partnership that is reflected here today in your presence, and it is that spirit of the partnership that endorses what Trinidad and Tobago wants now - the spirit of freedom for all times. Tell me, do you feel the power of the People's Partnership? Do you believe that we have now come here for a common, noble purpose? And do you have faith that we will win?

The spirit of freedom that pervades this atmosphere and has electrified our people now, is a freedom from being victims from our own colonial democracy. It's a freedom from being victims imprisoned by old ideas. It's a freedom from being victims of the politics of division in our own country. So why are we here? We are here today to start the journey to put our country right. That's why we are here.

And we seek your permission. As far as my eyes can see, almost all of Trinidad and Tobago is here. We seek your permission now, as a sacred duty, to start that road, to start that journey, to start that vision, to put our country right. Enough of the politics of the past. You understand that, in this election, the greatest risk you can take is to try the same old politics, with the same old players, and expect a different result. You have shown what history teaches us: that in defining moments like this one, the change we need comes when people stand up and insist on the new ideas, new leadership and new politics for a new time. The new politics is symbolised by Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The new leadership and politics is reflected in the People's Partnership. And a new time is your time, your presence, your participation, your involvement, your permission. The new time is your time, and this is your time today.

So, my friends, in this defining time, let us lift our eyes towards the challenges that await us next Monday. Now that Mr. Manning's government has collapsed, our challenge is to install a new and stable government in Trinidad and Tobago. This government will be a government of character, a government of competence and a government of compassion. What else can it be? Next Monday, you shall elect a government that shall now work for the people instead of having the people work to keep a government there. You will have a government where our promises will be kept as we build a new trust between leadership and people; where we will reverse the mismanagement of our economy to protect our future and embrace development for all - inclusive development; where we shall change the priorities of development to satisfy our primary task: the basic needs of our people - water, affordable food, home ownership, crime free society, the special needs of our landless, the vendors, the single mothers and the physically challenged. Trinidad and Tobago's international image must be repaired, and we must make our presence meaningful in the new dynamics of the global order of today. We shall stand proud; we shall stand tall, we shall stand with a sense of greatness when we make ourselves known to the world around us. This little nation of ours shall make us proud as humble citizens of our land.

So, my friends, let us build one nation based on equity and fairness. Let us build one people, energized by our cultural diversity and richness. Let us build one society where happiness comes from the joy of achievement and the expression of our creative effort; where we shall build one democracy that is community based and will involve the people in the major decisions that affect their lives and the way our country's resources are managed and distributed. Strong communities make strong nations. That is our charge. That is why you are here. That is why we have gathered in such enormous numbers here in Aranguez. That is why we are here to install a new government in Trinidad and Tobago. Now it is happening. The time is now. This is the time. We will do it. Are you ready, my friends? Are you ready, my friends? Are you ready, my friends? I am ready. We are ready. All Trinidad and Tobago is ready. Let us simply do it.

Thank you very much.
