Baksh extends sympathy to family of worker killed in bridge collapse

Need To Inspect Bridges, Roads and Electricity and Telephone Poles

Sadiq Baksh, former Minister of Works, who was responsible for most of the new transportation infrastructure constructed or refurbished in Trinidad and Tobago, today expressed his sympathy for the family of Mr Ramdath Bissoon who was crushed to death when the Bailey Bridge at the Caroni River collapsed.
"Poor man," he said. "This should never have happened. It is needless and should have been avoided."

Mr. Baksh explained, "A bridge just should not fall, either during construction or, worse, during removal this just should not happen".

The former Works and Transport Minister advised, "We need a nationwide inspection of all bridges beginning with the new Caroni Bridge and the overpass at Grand Bazaar now under construction. There must be a thorough examination of all bridges, especially the one at Godineau, and repairs done immediately. There must also be planned inspection and maintenance, something that stopped when I left the Ministry of Works". He recalled that during his time as the head of the ministry, there was a bridges section within the ministry with special responsibility for the countries' bridges, which was staffed by experienced and qualified engineers. He said, he had high praise for them because they had efficiently carried out constant inspections and repairs not only on bridges, but overpasses.

Mr. Baksh added, "It is extremely unfortunate that it took a tragedy for the nation to be alerted to the dangerous state of our bridges. What we need to worry about as well is the lack of maintenance of the roads and the electricity and telephone poles. Given the heavy rains we have been experiencing and will continue to face during this hurricane season, where the experts predict a busy season, we have to inspect them now and be pre-emptive and pro-active otherwise we can expect more tragedies like the one in Caroni.
