Pressure on COP's Sharon

CONGRESS of the People Leader Winston Dookeran has made it abundantly clear to Sharon Gopaul-McNicol that he does not approve of her accepting any senatorship from UNC Leader Basdeo Panday, and that if she does, she cannot continue as COP deputy Political Leader, reliable sources said yesterday.
Yesterday, Dookeran told the Express that Gopaul-McNicol told him last week she had been offered a senatorship by Panday and she was considering it.
"It would be in her personal capacity. She would not represent, nor would she be authorised to speak to other parties on behalf of the COP. This is what I told her and that is where it stands right now," Dookeran said.
The Express was reliably informed that Gopaul-McNicol would be relieved of her position as deputy Political Leader if she accepts. "And she understands that," the source said.
However, Gopaul-McNicol told the Express yesterday: "There is no offer of a UNC senatorship to me. There was an offer (by the UNC leader) of a senatorship to a member of the COP. The person would remain a member of the COP. This would fall under a bipartisanship kind of Opposition, similar to what we are seeing in the United States at the present time."
She added that she had discussions with her political leader about the issue.
"This is a new direction in the politics and it is a good thing," she said.
If Gopaul-McNicol accepts, it would mean that she has jumped from the PNM to the COP to the UNC. She said discussions were still taking place and she would be able to say more next week.
However, one senior party member stated that it would be "an act of indiscipline and political immorality of the highest order" if Gopaul-McNicol accepts without the approval of her leader.
The matter has not been discussed at the executive level or at the National Council level. But there is a lot of debate within the COP on the proposal. One of the main factors influencing the debate is the infighting in the UNC.
"The gloves are off between Panday, Warner and Maharaj," one source stated.
Noting that there was still a lot of distrust within the COP of Panday, the source stated: "Panday brought back Ramesh (Lawrence Maharaj) to take down Dookeran (after Dookeran became political leader of the UNC).
"Remember that meeting at Mid-Centre Mall at which Dookeran was booed and Maharaj thunderously applauded? Now that Panday's back is once again up against a wall, he wants to use Dookeran and the COP to 'buss' Ramesh and Jack (Warner)'s throat."
