Pulling bull by the horns
There are some utterances that stir national debate that can only come from the Honourable Colm Imbert. The PH taxi controversy is the latest example. No one can fault the Minister for taking the moral high ground by stating that “pulling bull” is illegal and persons engaged in such activities should be prosecuted. Taking the bull by the horns, he proposed that these PH drivers should seek to be licensed as proper taxis or else face the brunt of the law. Problem solved.
Have you ever tried pulling a bull by the horns? Like this initiative, it is unlikely that much progress will be made. We are famed for our one day crackdowns, whether they are on pirated DVDs, prostitution or crime in general. Headlines are made with such actions; but as soon as the newspapers hit the dustbin these very activities reappear in the very same locations. We must ask ourselves if this intended crackdown on PH drivers is a sincere attempt to combat an aspect of lawlessness or merely a convenient distraction from the rampaging violence, particularly against women and children, which has been plaguing our society.
We must not forget that the PH issue came on the heels of a heinous murder/suicide allegedly committed by one such driver. We often hear of sexual offences and abductions associated with said drivers, but these acts are not exclusive to them. It is a sad fact that no one taking public transportation is safe. Nor are the maxi and taxi drivers who provide this service safe as they are always wondering if the next passenger aims to steal their daily earnings or cut their throats. It is naïve to think that owning your own vehicle makes you any safer as brazen criminals are there stalking the carparks or waiting to carjack you at the next red light. We have long passed the stage of saying that crime has spiralled out of control. So by all means, grab the headlines with crackdown on the PH drivers but know that much more is needed to bring this violent upheaval under control.
